Poppy Seed was born on Poppy Day, 11. 11 at 11. This London UK poet eludes to the symbol of a black Seed as having maximum potential for growth. A versatile, visionary, and profound wordsmith Poppy Seed is essentially a protest poet, addressing socio-environmental, injustice and human rights issues. She is particularly active within woman rights awareness e.g. SWIFT (Sisters Working in Film and Television) SA, WILDE (Women Into Literature & Development Enterprise) UK, and work in UK Prisons. She has featured Sable’s ‘Burning Flames’ poetry collection, and in the ‘Poetry for Grenfell’ book . She composes original music to enhance the themes of her performance work to extremely moving effect featuring a host of notable live musicians including Celloman, Barry Dread, Henry Defoe, Nyanjah, Stephen Marley, Mosi Conde,…
POPPY SEED has toured internationally over the past 20 years, receiving various poetry awards in the UK including Best poet from Farrago poetry slam, Black Women in the Arts and the prestigious Nina Simone Award, and performed in Poetry Africa. Endorsed by Sade and Mutubaruka, her work has featured on soundtracks such as ‘500 Years Later’ and ‘ The Motherland’ cinematographically beautiful documentary films by accomplished producer/director Owen Alik Shahada.
Poppy Seed is a playwright, Lecturer, author of book ‘Poetry For Phases, Stages & Pages’, and writer director of stage Musical ‘Same Differences’. She has penned two albums ‘A Taste’ & ‘Coming Through’, and EP ‘Four For Now’, charting her times in beloved South Africa. ‘Earth Song’ the recent single, features Madala Kunene famous SA folk musician, and is her ‘save the planet piece’.
She is now embarking on scripts for film projects, a book called ‘Yes We Cancer’, and is working on her new album set for release this summer. She is also on the board for the Global Values Alliance about to launch the Global poetry celebration competition, and doing poetry workshops on-line with Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, and freelance workshops.
Often compared to Sade, Eryka Badu, and Gil Scot, Poppy Seed poetry is well crafted, and the music embraces African Roots-Reggae, and Jazz, flavors. Described as being ‘On the Cusp of Poetry and Song, Poppy Seed is a poet extra-ordinaire.
